march Meeting

The next meeting will be held on March 19, 2019 at 7 PM.

Our guest speaker will be David Monti, RISAA Vice President.

With fish stocks threatened by overfishing, climate change and gear conflicts it will take all of us to grow fish to abundance so there are more in the water for all of us to catch, release (and eat).  Fish stock status and regulations on the fish we catch as well as climate change and conservation initiatives to grow fish to abundance will be highlighted.  Dave will also address Magnuson Stevens Act legislation that passed last year and what impact it will likely have on recreational fishing.

Tickets are on sale for a very special raffle of a Van Staal fly fishing reel and LL Bean fly rod combination.  This matched 5/6 weight combination can be used in fresh water or in salt for small stripers and hickory shad, especially in the rivers and tidal flats.

Tickets for our Annual Awards Banquet in April are also on sale at the meeting for $30.

And this just in…  The Banquet will be held at the Spain Restaurant in Narragansett on Tuesday, April 9th at 6 PM.  Please note that the 9th is the second Tuesday in April.  The restaurant is booked by a large organization for the entire third week of April.

February Meeting: 2/19/19

Our second Club meeting of the new year had a great turn-out to hear DJ Muller give a lively and entertaining talk on the methods he uses to target large striped bass.  DJ spoke about the various bass population estimates and how they relate to his fishing.  He shared a few of his tried and true techniques and many personal stories of fishing the East Coast.

January Meeting: 1/15/19

We kicked off the new year with a bang by having Charley Soares present his 50-year collection of pictures and information on bass stands and striped bass fishing.

If you read Charley’s recent article entitled, Bass Stands, in On The Water magazine, you may guess how exciting and informative this lecture was.  Charley came equipped with dozens of pictures and drawings depicting the old bass stands that were erected in the past to give fishermen better access to their striped bass fishing grounds.  Some of those artifacts still exist in our area today.

Charley spoke for about 90 minutes and made time afterward to chat with members and mingle.  He did not disappoint!

Christmas Banquet

Our annual Christmas Banquet was enjoyed by over fifty Surfcasters on Thursday evening  December 20th.  The festivities kicked off at 6 PM with beverages and hot appetizers passed around by Spain Restaurant’s mannerly waiters.  While everyone mingled and met and swapped tall tales of season’s passed (all true, of course), the waitstaff brought out and served a stunning buffet of mixed greens salad, chicken and peppers, roast pork tenderloin, sautéed shrimp, clams casino, stuffed mushrooms, and so much more!  The buffet line moved quickly and no one left hungry, to be sure!  After the feast, we moved right along to the raffle.  And what a raffle it was – you just had to be there to believe it!  The evening concluded with wishes for a Merry Christmas shared by all.

If anyone has pictures taken at the party, please send them in.

November Meeting: 11/20/18

Craig Cantelmo of Van Staal was our guest speaker at this month’s meeting.  Craig gave us an engaging overview of Van Staal’s history, its machining and production prowess, and the evolution of the warranty policy it’s known for today.  Craig also relayed how the company has used striped bass biomass stock estimates to guide the development of its line of small, lightweight reels.

The election of Club Officers was held after the presentation.  Results are here.
Our Christmas Banquet will take place at the Spain Restaurant on December 20th at 6 PM.  Members wishing to attend should contact Rich to ensure a spot ASAP.  December’s Banquet will again feature Spain’s exemplary buffet and a stellar line-up of raffle items.  Don’t miss out on this one!

October Meeting: 10/16/18

Our October meeting featured Surfcasters member Tommy Maguire who entertained us with a humorous and informative seminar on fishing from shore around Block Island.

Members should note that their annual dues can be paid in-person at the November meeting.

September Meeting: 9/18/18
September kicked off our Fall season of speakers with Chris Parisi sharing his views and deep experience fishing for false albacore on the eastern seaboard.  Chris also brought his gear and surf bag to give everyone a chance to see and touch the equipment he uses in his pursuits.

Hats off to Cliff Richer for organizing such a wonderful event, gathering the many, many raffle goodies, and keeping track of the million little details that benefit our Club in every way.

March Meeting: 3/20/18

Representatives of the Department of Environmental Management gave presentations on the APAIS program, an overview of the department’s enforcement program, and an update on striped bass from an ASMFC committee member.  This was an informative session that gave insight into the DEM officers and access point interviewers we encounter along our shores.

February Meeting: 2/20/18
Our February meeting broke from the usual seminar format as several fly tying experts demonstrated some basic tying techniques in a casual setting where Club members could walk around and watch various types of ties being made.
5th Annual Surf Day New & Used Tackle Sale
Our Annual Surf Day Tackle Sale was held on Saturday Feb. 10th.
Thirty vendor tables were loaded with new and used gear.  On hand were local plug builders, rod builders, a reel repair expert, an antique plug display, tons of tackle, and plenty of great home-cooked food.
It’s a great place to “up your gear” at a fraction of the cost.  What better way to spend a cold Saturday in February than with tons of fishing gear, guys talking striper fishing, and great food.
So mark your calendars for next February’s big event and come on down to get those great deals you just can’t pass up.

January Meeting: 1/16/18
Our January meeting featured Steve Yang, a local striped bass fishing expert who has plied our waters most of his life.
Steve presented an informative and technical seminar on the optimal times and tide to fish for stripers and other species of fish.  He demonstrated how to use the published tide tables to our advantage and how to “read between the lines” on the tables.  His was a great seminar.

Holiday Gift Cards for The Needy :  Last week Club member Mike Rogers dropped off our
gift card donations to South County Community Action and Narragansett Housing. They were
extremely appreciative for our donations and wished us a Very Happy Holiday season.
Two very special thanks go out to:
Club member John McDuff for donating (another!) surf rod for our November meeting raffle
and to Peter Jenkins, owner of Saltwater Edge Tackle Shop, who donated his Guest Speaker fee from our November meeting.
Both asked that the donations be put towards the “Needy Gift Cards”.  These are two very special fishermen!  Many thanks from all of us.
