Veterans Fishing Day

On September 24th the Narragansett Surfcasters held its first annual Veterans Fishing Day at Salty Brine State Beach in Galilee. This special event was conducted in association with the Veterans Administration which helped promote it within its readjustment network to at-risk veterans. Six veterans attended a late afternoon dinner, courtesy of Colvitto’s Bakery and a tutorial on saltwater fishing from shore and the beach. The instruction session was followed by hands-on surfcasting practice under the watchful eyes of Club members. Each veteran was provided a rod and reel and a few lures so they could continue to fish and practice casting on their own in an effort to help with their recovery. Dick’s Sporting Goods donated backpacks and water bottles for each participant as well. Everyone got wet in the surf due to an extreme high tide but each veterans said such a positive and fun experience outweighed the soggy clothes. And we, as a Club, thank the veterans who joined us and we look forward to seeing them again next year. A photo gallery of the day’s activities is below.
